Borriana (Burriana) is the capital of Plana Baixa, in the province of Castellón, known for its historical and archaeological heritage, its orange-growing tradition and its seafront —led by Playa de l'Arenal, awarded the Blue Flag.
Its City Council adds NaviLens to the Municipal Archaeology Museum (Museum Recognised by the Generalitat Valenciana), to the Centre Cultural Municipal “La Mercé” and to Playa de l'Arenal's equipment, together with accessible urban-furniture pieces.
The rollout was officially announced on 8 February 2025, with the installation of inclusive NaviLens QR codes on signage at the beaches and the natural area of Clot de la Mare de Déu (burriana.es; El Periódico Mediterráneo; Revista Poble). Later, ONCE visited Burriana to support the implementation and endorse its continuity, ahead of future visits in 2026 (burriana.es).
§ The challenge
So anyone can read Borriana.
- 01
A city with much to tell
Burriana holds a heritage that runs from the Palaeolithic Plana to the orange trade, with its Arab wall and the coexistence of three cultures. Traditional labels, panels and directories do not reach those who do not read Spanish or Catalan or have low vision.
- 02
Three settings, one accessible layer
Ajuntament de Borriana needed the Municipal Archaeology Museum, the Centre Cultural Municipal La Mercé and Playa de l'Arenal to speak the same accessibility language —without touching existing panels, display cases or furniture.
- 03
Information for residents and tourists
The audience is as diverse as the city: residents, schoolchildren, Blue-Flag tourists and people with visual disabilities. The solution had to work for everyone, without works and compatible with the institutional “Borriana” image.

§ The solution
A code next to every label.
The City Council adds a NaviLens sticker next to museum labels, La Mercé directories and beach panels. Pointing the camera, the free NaviLens GO app reads the content in the visitor's language.
The accessible layer respects the museography and the urban furniture, requires no works and also works for people who do not read Spanish or Catalan.
§ Timeline
From museum to promenade.
- Start
Municipal Archaeology Museum
Burriana City Council places NaviLens codes next to the welcome label, in each gallery (Palaeolithic, History of Burriana, CronoSendero) and on featured pieces. The NaviLens GO app reads the information in 42 languages.
- Expansion
Centre Cultural Municipal La Mercé
The La Mercé building adds NaviLens codes to its floor directory (Sala de Dansa i Ballet, Biblioteca, Sala d'Usos Múltiples, Museu Faller, Casa dels Gegants i Cabuts…) so any visitor knows what is on each floor.
- Today
Playa de l'Arenal and urban furniture
The Playa de l'Arenal Borriana info panel and urban furniture (walkways, accessible benches) carry NaviLens codes: legend, map, services and notices read aloud for everyone.
§ Walk-through
From Museu Arqueològic to Playa de l'Arenal.

Museum
Municipal Archaeology Museum — entrance
The red door of the Archaeology Museum of Burriana, next to the Museu Arqueològic Municipal recognised by the Generalitat Valenciana, carries a NaviLens code that introduces the museum and opening hours in 42 languages.

Museum
Welcome to the Archaeology Museum
The large bilingual panel “Welcome to the Municipal Archaeology Museum of Burriana!” includes a NaviLens code that narrates the introduction, the gallery map (Sala 1 Pieces with History, Sala 2 History of Burriana, Sala 3 CronoSendero) and the team's methodology.

Museum
Palaeolithic / Chalcolithic Gallery
In the Palaeolithic and Chalcolithic gallery, a NaviLens code next to the showcases describes the lithic tools found in the region and links them to Cova del Parpalló and Cova de Bolos.

Culture
Centre Cultural Municipal La Mercé
At Centre Cultural Municipal “La Mercé”, the vertical directory of Ground, First and Second floor —Sala d'Exposicions, Biblioteca, Sala de Dansa i Ballet, Museu Faller, Casa dels Gegants i Cabuts— is complemented by a NaviLens code that reads it aloud.

Furniture
Accessible walkway on public street
A wooden walkway to bridge kerb level differences includes a NaviLens code: the app warns of its presence and guides people with visual disabilities.

Beach
Playa de l'Arenal Borriana
The info panel of Playa de l'Arenal —Blue Flag— carries the NaviLens code next to the legend, map and general information: services, accessibility and notices read aloud in 42 languages.
§ What they said
