City Council
of Los Alcázares
The Los Alcázares City Council manages one of the Mar Menor's key tourist destinations, part of the Smart Tourist Destinations Network, focused on making destinations accessible for every visitor.
After publishing in 2022 the town's first braille tourist leaflet with ONCE, the Tourism Department took the next step in 2023: deploying more than 40 NaviLens points across the municipality.
The codes cover beaches, historic spas (La Concha, La Encarnación, San Antonio), churches, monuments —to the Fisherman, the Huertano, the actor Saza—, military base, Mar Menor Yacht Club, Aeronautical Museum, tourist offices, City Hall, Municipal Library, La Torre Youth Centre, CIS, CISSMU and the murals of the International Urban Art Museum of the Mar Menor.
§ The challenge
An entire tourist municipality, also made audible.
- 01
A tourist town spread across many landmarks
Churches, historic spas, monuments to the fisherman and the huertano, a military base, yacht club, tourist offices, library and an International Urban Art Museum with dozens of murals. Without a common digital thread, visitors with sight loss missed half the story.
- 02
Accessibility beyond braille
The Council had already published the first braille tourist leaflet with ONCE in 2022, but wanted a live, multilingual system scannable from a distance — covering foreign tourists and people with low vision too, without having to touch the panel.
- 03
Municipal services also accessible
The challenge included not just heritage but everyday services: the Justice of the Peace court, the Library, the Las Claras Civic Centre, CIS, CISSMU and La Torre Youth Centre. Places where a blind person also needs to know what's behind the door.

§ The solution
One single plate, dozens of landmarks within voice reach.
Every point of interest carries a plate with the NaviLens code, readable from over 10 metres, without focusing and on the move, using the free NaviLens GO app.
The phone delivers the information in the user's chosen language: location description, practical data, historical context or mural authorship.
It works the same for a blind person arriving at the Las Claras Civic Centre as for an international tourist wanting to understand the mural on the next street.
§ International Urban Art Museum
Every Mar Menor mural, now also told out loud.

§ Buildings & services
Beyond tourism: everyday life in the town.

§ Timeline
From braille to voice guidance, leaving no one out.
- 2022
First braille tourist leaflet with ONCE
The Tourism Department, led by María José Díaz Aragón, publishes the town's first braille tourist leaflet with ONCE — a first step toward sensory accessibility for the destination.
- Feb 2023
NaviLens rollout across the municipality
The Council installs around 40 NaviLens points across beaches, buildings, monuments, urban murals and services. The tool becomes available to any resident or tourist via the free NaviLens GO app.
- 2023 →
Progressive expansion as a Smart Tourist Destination
As a member of the Smart Destinations Network, the town gradually expands accessible signage — including the International Urban Art Museum — so the full cultural and tourist offer can be walked with voice, in the visitor's language.
